Dark, progressive metal from the UK. rather keen. young, spunky sort of chaps. probably down with at least a handful of kids, if only they could remember where they left them... they've tried the parlour, they've tried father's study but to no avail. would you like some crudites? we do. we think they're devilishly wonderful.

BY HEAVENS, IT MUST BE FRIDAY!

excuses are for the unsure, we strongly advise you commence the warm-up for the worst of the weekend and follow in the footsteps of our formidable forefathers - if it was good enough for sir winston ‘why yes, that’s a cigar in my pocket’ churchill then it’s good enough for the rest of us.

reasons be damned; turn that hurrumph into a huzzah, crack open another magnum of the bubbly - DRY, COLD & WILD!

  1. Is it necessary to practise what you preach?

As we continue to work on the DVD content for our asylum digibook, arguably our most occult-influenced release to date, a number of intriguing questions present themselves when including material about the spiritual and mythological influences involved in the creation of the songs and the piece as a whole.

Last year, Tim Lambesis (infamous frontman of Californian metalcore act As I Lay Dying) admitted in an interview nearing his sentencing for conspiring to have his wife murdered that he, and other members of his band, were not in fact as Christian as they had purported - a factor that had supposedly been key to the adoration of a sizeable portion of their fanbase.

Though exhibiting a decline in numbers over recent years, Christian & gospel music in the USA last year amassed over 17 million album sales [source: Statista].  Were an American band to reach out to that still affluent consumer base, they could feasibly be attaching that demographic to the rock & alternative genre’s already huge audience numbers in terms of potential record sales and income.

If there’s one thing that a fair number of North America’s Christians don’t take kindly to, it’s having their beliefs hackneyed or exploited.  The emergence of this kind of faith-based scandal has upset a considerable portion of the band’s fans and remains an eager topic of conversation on social media sites despite their relative radio silence.

However, is this strictly exclusive to Christians and bands who report to be ‘of faith’?  from Paganini to Peccatum, musicians have capitalised on the suggestion of a diabolical nature, yet a sizeable part of the sacrilegious community similarly dislike their own beliefs being taken lightly.

It’s long been considered that the devil gets the best tunes, but whilst it can be seen as a pretty penny to be made (at whatever cost, in this realm or another) a good few music genres have also seen a continued trend in their hitherto most 'evil’ practitioners and pariahs eschewing their more extreme views in their later years.  Is this any different?

Whilst undeniably less prolific or as established as the institutions they mirror, there is still a strong amount of organised occult and Satanic groups or even churches who continue to press for recognition in areas such as legislature, education and ethical considerations.  With current affairs such as the Charlie Hebdo shootings in Paris, the issue of religious sensitivity is a debate that still rages on.

Thrash legends Slayer’s Tom Araya has been vocal about his own Catholic beliefs despite his band’s openly anti-Christian lyrical subjects over many of their songs.  When that news broke, much of the reaction to it within the metal community seemed relatively calm and rational, with many able to accept that a bit of theatrics goes a long way - indeed, though not religiously slanted, many rap & hip hop fans might admit that far less crimes have been committed in real life than reported on record by their heroes.

Occult and Satanic symbology is a powerful marketing tool within extreme metal, so much so that being an openly Christian band is seen as taboo.  With all reluctance towards 'posers’ in the still regrettably heterocentric fraternity of heavy metal, how many bands can actively say they genuinely walk the left hand path and not simply talk it?

In talanas, we’ve been careful never to declare a band-wide commitment or defence of any one faith, anti-faith or spirituality, however it doesn’t take a genius to work out to which side our lyrical and visual sympathies lie.  Our friends and figurative forebears Akercocke were somewhat brazen in their use of Satanic imagery which, their musical prowess notwithstanding, in many respects provided them with notoriety in the scene and infamy outside it however there are some in the Wiccan community who react to any use of their faith’s symbols and meanings in much the same way that a dyed-in-the-wool metal fan might when a catwalk model wears a Motörhead t-shirt without any knowledge or Lemmy or the mythical powers of his warts.

Few members of modern Western society react well to seeing a tattoo of a swastika despite a growing body of people actively working at reclaiming its association back towards its far more positive Eastern roots.  Whilst none can lay outright claim to the absolute sentiments of a symbol or icon (after all, a crucifix was at one point merely a tool of execution), what remains is the question of whether its use is appropriate at particular points and whether profit garnered from its use is through fair gain.
